The harder part is making it visible.
At The Magnolia Inn, our mission isn’t simply to provide beautiful rooms or host memorable celebrations. We want this historic house to continue doing something meaningful—for the guests who stay here, the people who gather here, and the community outside our front door.
That means preserving a piece of Clayton’s history.
It means creating a place where people genuinely feel welcome.
It means supporting local businesses and opening our doors to the community.
And sometimes, it means giving a room to someone who badly needs a few days of rest.
Those ideas are at the heart of our mission.
A Historic House Should Still Have a Life
The Magnolia Inn began as the Oscar G. Smith House, a Queen Anne Victorian built in 1895.
Preserving it matters to us.
But we don’t believe a historic property should become a museum where everyone is afraid to touch anything.
A house survives because people continue to use it.
Guests sleep upstairs.
Families gather around tables.
Couples celebrate weddings and anniversaries.
Neighbors come for events.
Friends sit on the porch longer than they intended.
Preserving this house isn’t simply about protecting what happened here in the past. It’s about making sure the building continues to have a place in Clayton’s story.

We Want Clayton to Use This House, Too
We love welcoming travelers, but The Magnolia Inn was never meant to exist only as seven guest rooms.
We want people who live here to have reasons to walk through the front door, too.
That might be a wedding or birthday celebration. It might be Afternoon Tea, live music, a class, a business gathering, or something we haven’t thought of yet.
There’s something wonderful about a house that’s been standing in Clayton since 1895 still being filled with people from Clayton today.
The occasions have changed.
The house is still gathering people.

Sometimes the Room Can Do Some Good
A few times each year, our guest rooms serve a different purpose.
The Magnolia Inn is a Premier Porch Partner with A Mother’s Rest, a nonprofit that coordinates affordable respite retreats for parents and caregivers of loved ones with disabilities and chronic illnesses.
Through the partnership, we dedicate four respite weekends each year to caregivers who spend much of their lives looking after someone else.
For a few days, someone else makes breakfast.
The porch is somewhere to sit.
The bedroom door closes.
Nothing is required of them.
We’ve written more about our partnership with A Mother’s Rest, because it deserves a story of its own.
Here, it’s simply one example of what we mean when we say we want this house to be useful.
When Someone Visits Us, We Want Them to Meet Clayton
Our address may be The Magnolia Inn, but we don’t want a guest’s experience of Clayton to end at our front porch.
Go have dinner downtown.
Find a locally owned shop.
See what’s happening at the performing arts center.
Have another coffee.
Talk to people.
Come back and tell us what you found.
We work with local businesses and vendors for the same reason. Supporting Clayton isn’t separate from hospitality. It’s part of introducing visitors to the place we call home.
A guest shouldn’t leave knowing only The Magnolia Inn.
We hope they leave knowing Clayton a little better, too.
The Mission Is in the Small Things
Mission statements tend to use big words.
The actual work is usually smaller.
Restore the old detail instead of replacing it.
Choose something made by a local business.
Set the breakfast table.
Open the doors for a community gathering.
Give a caregiver a room for the weekend.
Welcome someone who’s never been to Clayton before.
None of those things alone defines The Magnolia Inn.
Together, they do.
Of course we want this house to remain beautiful.
But even more than that, we want it to matter.
To the travelers who discover Clayton because they stayed here. To the families who celebrate something important here. To the businesses we work with. To the neighbors who walk through our doors. And, occasionally, to someone who simply needs somewhere to rest.
The Oscar G. Smith House has been part of Clayton since 1895.
Our job is to make sure it still has a reason to be here.
