The Company Holiday Party Is About More Than the Company

For most of the year, we know our coworkers in a very particular way.

We know who answers emails immediately.

Who always has the answer in a meeting.

Who drinks an alarming amount of coffee.

Who can fix the spreadsheet.

Who is perpetually five minutes late.

We may spend more waking hours with these people than we do with some of our closest friends—and still know remarkably little about their lives outside of work.

Then December comes around.

Someone brings a husband you’ve heard about for three years. You finally meet the wife whose name is always mentioned in passing. The person from accounting is telling a story that has absolutely nothing to do with accounting.

And for a few hours, everybody gets to be something other than their job title.

That’s what a good company holiday party can do.

Work Looks Different From Across a Dinner Table

There are plenty of opportunities for companies to bring employees together.

Meetings. Retreats. Conferences. Training days. Team-building exercises.

Nearly all of them still have an objective.

A holiday party is allowed to exist simply because you made it through another year together.

That’s worth something.

Especially for a small company, where every person in the room probably had some hand in what went right—and helped deal with what didn’t.

Put everyone around a beautiful dinner table and the hierarchy softens a little. Conversations wander. People laugh. Nobody needs to take notes.

For once, nothing needs to come out of the meeting.

There’s a Reason It Feels Better Somewhere Else

You can decorate a conference room.

But everyone still knows it’s the conference room.

Take the same group somewhere completely different and something changes.

At The Magnolia Inn, that means stepping into an 1895 Victorian home in downtown Clayton at Christmastime.

There isn’t a ballroom waiting behind the front door. There are parlors, dining rooms, fireplaces, a staircase dressed for the season, and rooms people naturally wander between.

It feels less like arriving at a corporate function and more like being invited somewhere.

For a smaller team, that distinction matters.

Then Someone Brings Their Other Half

Spouses and partners can make a company holiday party more interesting almost immediately.

Suddenly, there’s someone in the room who doesn’t know about the quarterly numbers and has no opinion whatsoever about the new software rollout.

Excellent.

People start talking about where they’re traveling for Christmas. Someone tells the story behind how they met. You discover your coworker has a hobby you’ve somehow never heard about despite sitting 20 feet away from them for four years.

The company hasn’t disappeared.

It’s just no longer the only thing everyone has in common.

And That’s Probably Enough

A holiday party doesn’t necessarily need to accomplish anything more profound than that.

Eat something wonderful.

Pour the wine.

Introduce people who haven’t met.

Say a few words about the year.

Laugh about something that would’ve been deeply irritating in March but has finally become funny in December.

Then send everyone home knowing one another a little better than they did when they arrived.

At The Magnolia Inn, we spend December surrounded by Christmas trees, greenery, candlelight, good food, and people gathering around tables.

Some are families.

Some are friends.

And some spend Monday through Friday working together.

For one evening, they don’t have to.
